For this Epsom unit project our clients desired a space reminiscent of their previous home in West Auckland native bush, while requiring a low-maintenance garden and accessible access suitable for their advancing age. The exposed street-facing location meant privacy was another primary concern.
A key feature is the hardwood boardwalk and deck. This provides wide and level access from gate and car pad to front door. While the deck offers an easy outdoor relaxation and entertaining area, extending the internal living space. The natural tones of the hardwood harmonise with the native plant palette and the 1980s brickwork.
The entirely native planting scheme provides visual interest with minimal upkeep. The diverse textures and colours offer year-round appeal and a connection to the New Zealand landscape, referencing their previous home. The layered planting also creates a natural screen, enhancing privacy from the street and transforming the previously exposed frontage. While the organic forms of the native plants soften the boardwalk and 1980s architecture.
